Cybercriminals use a variety of techniques and attacks. Sometimes they want to be seen, they want to cause demonstrative damage, for example in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on websites. Sometimes they want to distract attention from other attacks or just to test their skills, show their strength and make headlines.

The study, which was released at this week's Black Hat 2021 event, where Acronis is a Diamond sponsor, cautions that based on attack trends identified in the first six months of the year, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are particularly vulnerable.

Compromising the telecommunications providers enables the attackers to access and monitor communications without the need to directly hack or compromise the individual targets. Researchers found the attacks to be very adaptive, persistent, and evasive. Attackers worked diligently to hide their activity and maintain persistence on compromised systems—even responding in real-time to mitigation attempts and working to evade security efforts.

Organizations have experienced a 29% increase in cyber-attacksglobally.The EMEA region showed the highest growth with 36%, followed by the Americas with an increase of 34% with APAC witnessing a 13% growth in attacks.
