Students are being taught how to mix innovation and creativity with social, technological, and human elements as part of a ground-breaking graduate degree programme at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai that will prepare them to construct sustainable smart cities of the future.
The Master of Science in Professional Studies: Smart Cities programme was created in response to the goals of Dubai’s smart city to provide and promote the growth of intellectual capital in the field. It was the first programme of its type in the region and one of only two such programmes worldwide.

Dr. Sanjay Modak, Chair of the Graduate Programs & Research Department at RIT Dubai explained, “The MSPS: Smart Cities program is designed to bring together three key elements that make up the city of the future – Sustainability, Technology and Social and Economic factors. The program studies the use of big data, the digital transformation aspect, the funding angle, the public policy effects and sustainability remains an overarching theme.”
Beyond the fundamentals of a smart city, it encourages an interdisciplinary approach to support the vision for technologically advanced neighbourhoods that offer smart services to support a healthy and holistic way of life. The programme addresses important concerns like food, trash, transportation, education, and energy systems while taking into account the intricate relationships between each aspect and taking place as a city undergoes a digital transformation to become a smart city.
One of the main problems facing nations as they work to create smart ecosystems in their urban regions is to improve connectivity and digital infrastructure while also enhancing the liveability and sustainability of the cities. The UAE will gain international recognition as a pioneer in integrated urban development thanks to the recent plans revealed for Expo City Dubai. Graduates and professionals can participate in these advances through the curriculum at RIT Dubai, and they can also take what they learn home and apply it to their own nations.
