GITEX GLOBAL 2024, the world’s largest tech and startup event organized by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), showcased the UAE’s leadership in driving the future of digital cities. The event highlighted the most disruptive advancements in urban digitalization and smart living.
With over 6,500 exhibitors, 1,800 startups, and 1,200 investors from more than 180 countries, GITEX GLOBAL recorded its highest-ever international participation, welcoming 200,000 visitors. This impressive turnout solidified Dubai’s reputation as a premier global hub for technology and innovation.
The event featured a key conference where policymakers, visionaries, and industry leaders discussed leveraging advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, and robotics to enhance interconnectivity and drive economic growth. The digital city industry is generating over USD $1.83 trillion in revenue, reflecting a 21% increase from the previous year, according to Precedence Research, as reported in Enterprise Apps Today. GITEX demonstrated how the UAE is steering the future of cities through cutting-edge initiatives that utilize AI, IoT, and data-driven systems to create hyper-connected, sustainable environments.
UAE’s Strategic Leadership in Future Cities
The UAE’s investments in digital transformation are positioning the nation as a world leader in digital city development. Dubai and Abu Dhabi both earned spots in the top 12 global cities in the Smart City Index 2024, compiled by Switzerland’s International Institute for Management Development (IMD), highlighting their rapid advancements in urban technologies.
The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) is at the forefront of this digital evolution, overseeing digital transformation at the federal level. TDRA’s strategic goals focus on enhancing smart lifestyles and strengthening technological infrastructure. Their presence at GITEX GLOBAL underscored their commitment to innovation.
His Excellency Eng. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director General of TDRA, stated, “We take pride in our participation at GITEX Global 2024, where the Digital Government Platform showcased innovative solutions that exemplify the UAE’s leadership in digital transformation. This year, our collaboration with government partners has enabled us to present a vision for seamless digital services and the integration of advanced technologies. Driving Dubai’s transformation is Digital Dubai, which plays a crucial role in accelerating the emirate’s digital evolution. Through strategic partnerships, Digital Dubai has significantly elevated the city’s digital economy, built competencies of national talent, and maintained Dubai’s digital wealth. Initiatives like the “Paperless Strategy,” making Dubai the world’s first paperless government, and unified digital platforms such as DubaiNow, which offers over 280 digital services, exemplify the city’s digital transformation.
His Excellency Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Director General of Digital Dubai, emphasized, “Over a quarter-century of Dubai’s digital transformation, the Dubai World Trade Centre has served as an annual meeting point for the public and private sectors, providing a platform to showcase achievements and outline future plans in utilizing the latest technologies for shaping the future. This synergy has evolved into a true partnership, positioning Dubai as a global capital for exhibitions and a hub for innovative companies and experts.”
Complementing these efforts, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is advancing its Digital Strategy with 82 city projects aimed at revolutionizing urban mobility and infrastructure, aligning with the broader goal of creating a connected and efficient city.
Driving Sustainable Development
Masdar City, a pioneering initiative in Abu Dhabi, plays a fundamental role in the UAE’s net-zero journey. As a model for future cities, Masdar City integrates sustainability practices into its urban fabric.
At GITEX GLOBAL, Martin Yates, Government Tech Advisor at Presight, emphasized technology’s crucial role in overcoming challenges in future urban infrastructures, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that creating safer, more efficient, and livable cities requires shared vision and collaboration among stakeholders.
Tan Boon Khai, CEO of JTC Corporation in Singapore, echoed this sentiment, advocating for stronger public-private partnerships to leverage technology in tackling urban challenges. Dimitri van Zantvliet, CISO at Dutch Railways, stressed the importance of cybersecurity in fostering trust among citizens as cities evolve to become smarter through AI integration.
Showcasing Innovations Driving Digital Growth
Attendees experienced firsthand some of the groundbreaking innovations driving digital city growth, including Dubai Municipality’s Robot Scanner, which aids in city planning and infrastructure development. Visitors also explored the Uni-Mini, a compact unmanned surface vehicle designed to conduct survey operations with minimal manpower, and Abu Dhabi’s advanced smart traffic system that enhances urban mobility.
Connecting the Global Tech Landscape
GITEX GLOBAL continues to strengthen its role as a connector for the global technology ecosystem, seamlessly integrating the world’s largest network of tech events. Upcoming events include GITEX AFRICA Morocco from 14-16 April, GITEX ASIA Singapore on 23-25 April, and GITEX EUROPE Berlin from 21-23 May 2025. The next GITEX GLOBAL is scheduled for 13-17 October 2025, promising another year of heightened innovation and collaboration within the tech industry. In 2026, GITEX GLOBAL will relocate to Expo City Dubai, further expanding its reach and impact.
