The swift progression of quantum computing is fueling an intense global competition, notably impacting regions worldwide including the Middle East, as indicated by recent findings from Frost & Sullivan. The United States and China are leading in the development of quantum computing and cryptography, but the Middle East’s increasing engagement in this field will be a key focus at Intersec 2024, scheduled from January 16-18, 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

Quantum computing holds the promise of transforming cybersecurity through enhanced encryption methods, while simultaneously posing a challenge to existing encryption techniques. Thus, adapting to this quantum era is essential for safeguarding data against emerging threats.

Although still in developmental stages, quantum computing is expected to significantly influence sectors such as scientific research, cryptography, finance, supply chains, logistics, and drug discovery.

Rajarshi Dhar, Principal Consultant for Security at Frost & Sullivan.

“Quantum computing is a groundbreaking advancement in computing power. The technology has vast potential for addressing complex problems more effectively than traditional computers. The continued progress in quantum computing is set to play a crucial role in the future landscape of science, technology, and society.”

Frost & Sullivan anticipate a notable increase in the quantum cryptography market in the next five years, with a significant portion of revenue coming from businesses, followed by the government and defense sectors.

Dhar further mentioned, “The growth is driven by the looming threat of quantum computers rendering current security measures obsolete. It’s imperative to upgrade security systems with future-proof cryptography that can withstand both quantum and sophisticated attacks.”

While the United States is currently a leader in quantum computing and cryptography, China is rapidly gaining ground and is expected to significantly influence future technological advancements.

In the Middle East, the UAE is actively participating in the quantum computing and cryptography race, with initiatives like the Quantum Research Centre and efforts by UAE’s institutes towards productization. In September 2023, the Technology Innovation Institute introduced cryptography estimators for assessing the security of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) schemes.

Likewise, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are advancing in the quantum computing arena, with Qatar investing US$ 10 million in the Qatar Centre for Quantum Computing and Saudi Arabia establishing the Quantum Computing Council.

The implications of quantum computing will be thoroughly explored at the two-day Intersec 2024 Cyber Security Conference, attracting a diverse group of experts, leaders, and innovators to discuss the future of cyber security.

Distinguished regional and international speakers include His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government; Fadhel Al Marri from the Dubai Electronic Security Center; Craig Jones from Interpol, Singapore; and Sergi Marcen from the Government of Catalonia, Spain.

Grant Tuchten, Portfolio Director at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, the organizer of Intersec, remarked: “The Cyber Security Conference is a pivotal event for enhancing understanding of cyber security challenges and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to address these challenges. The in{:cyber} Pavilion at Intersec will feature top cyber security companies like Fortinet, Moro Hub, Alpha Data, and ManageEngine.”

The in{:cyber} Pavilion at Intersec 2024 will host the Hack Arena, a challenge for regional cybersecurity experts, and the Intersec Innovators Arena (IIA), supporting startups in presenting their products to potential investors.

Interactive workshops at the pavilion will include the ITU-led Scenario Based Exercise and a Table Top Exercise simulating cyber-attacks on financial institutions.

Celebrating its 25th edition under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Intersec marks a milestone in security technology innovation. With 1,000 exhibitors from 60 countries and 45,000 visitors, it stands as a premier global platform for the security, safety, and fire protection industries.
