WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that can transcribe voice messages, according to sources. The new function is now being tested on the iOS version of the instant messaging application, but it may eventually be available to both Android and iPhone users. At the moment, WhatsApp does not support voice message transcription. However, many third-party programs are available for iOS and Android that claims to transcribe the messages users receive.
WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp beta tracker, published screenshots showing the evolution of voice message transcription, at least on the iOS version of the program, in a report. The source provided a handful of screenshots to demonstrate how the transcription function will operate.
Based on one of the screenshots released by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will send voice chat information directly to Apple’s speech processor for transcription. This process means that WhatsApp’s parent company, Facebook, will be excluded from the transcribing process.
According to the screenshot, users will be requested to give Apple permission to share voice recordings when they want to transcribe a specific audio clip in WhatsApp.
Users will receive the transcription of their voice messages in a new section called Transcript after permission is given. Users would then get timestamps to allow them to skip to a specific section of the message, according to another screenshot posted by WABetaInfo.
WABetaInfo also indicated that when a voice chat is transcribed for the first time, the output would be stored locally in the WhatsApp database. This process will make it easier to retrieve the transcribed content quickly.
The screenshots that have been shared on the internet are from WhatsApp for iPhone. It indicates that the feature is presently being tested on iOS devices. WhatsApp, on the other hand, has a track record of delivering a similar experience on both Android and iOS smartphones. As a result, we may expect the transcribing feature to be available for Android as well.
The transcription tool will not be available to users until a later date. However, WhatsApp may grant beta testers access soon.
Over the past few months, WhatsApp has been attempting to better the voice chatting quality on its platform. It began by putting features like a playback speed slider and a waveforms interface to the test. WhatsApp quietly added new voice message animation to iOS earlier this year.
