Could you please share a bit about your background and how you became interested in the tech industry?
Iman Al-Omrani: I earned my B.S. in Computer Science from the United Arab Emirates University. Early in my professional career, I was tasked with delivering a self-programmed “business solution” within a three-month timeframe, a challenge that required me to learn a new programming language and understand the specific business requirements. Witnessing the successful implementation of this technological solution marked the moment I realized my passion for technology. As I continued my journey, I found fulfillment and joy, especially when I joined Amazon Web Services. AWS’s vast array of services and solutions allowed me to add value to our customers, optimizing their operations and transforming their processes to align with their business goals. The scale at which AWS operates is truly inspiring, enabling us to serve customers across various sectors and industries globally.
Diversity and inclusion are important topics in the tech industry. How do you think the industry has evolved concerning gender diversity, and what more needs to be done?
Iman Al-Omrani: When I began my career, I was often the only woman on my team. Over the years, I’ve seen a remarkable evolution in the technology industry, with an increasing number of women pursuing tech roles. At Amazon Web Services, I’m proud to be part of a company that values and champions diversity and inclusion in every team and office. As a woman at AWS, I enjoy full autonomy and trust to fulfill my role and achieve my goals. I believe it’s essential for all of us to ensure fairness in professional environments, from role selection to promotions. Mentoring is also vital, as it offers support and guidance throughout one’s career journey. I’ve had three mentors over my 20-year career, and I continue to reach out to them when needed. Such support can make a significant difference.
Can you share a particularly memorable success story or project that you’re proud of in your tech career?
Iman Al-Omrani: One of the most memorable projects in my career was during my time as Deputy Chief Technology Officer at Expo 2020 Dubai. We had to deliver Expo 2020’s Technology masterplan, which involved over 120 projects within a four-year timeframe, complicated further by the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Choosing to adopt AWS for our infrastructure was a game-changing decision, ensuring a seamless experience for Expo visitors worldwide. This allowed us to focus efficiently on developing dynamic business requirements that emerged during the event. Through this experience, I learned that AWS not only offers the right products and solutions but also the right people to execute projects of such scale successfully.
What advice would you give to young women considering a career in technology?
Iman Al-Omrani: Technology is a powerful enabler that plays a crucial role in today’s world. Women are empowered to pursue tech careers, and it’s essential for them to feel comfortable and express themselves fully in professional settings. Mentoring and support are key to their growth in their chosen fields. Women should recognize the value they bring to their teams and communities and understand their role in shaping a better future.
The tech industry is known for its rapid evolution. How do you stay up to date with the latest trends and technologies?
Iman Al-Omrani: To stay current in the ever-evolving tech industry, I regularly listen to audio books and read extensively. I focus on understanding the applications of technology as a tool across various industries and how it impacts our lives. Working at AWS provides me with invaluable knowledge about the latest technologies and how they are positively changing the world. It’s crucial to keep learning and adapting to stay at the forefront of the industry.
Beyond your tech-related work, what are some of your hobbies or interests, and how do you balance your professional and personal life?
Iman Al-Omrani: In my free time, I enjoy listening to both fiction and self-development audio books. I’m also passionate about supporting the female community and have ventured into opening a ladies-only boutique fitness studio. Maintaining a work-life balance is crucial for me, and I establish clear boundaries between my professional and personal life. Cooking and taking care of my family as a mother of three children are also essential aspects of my life, helping me find that balance.
