Prominent milestones across 45 years

The first substantial collaboration between ABB and the UAE was to enable the effective supply of desalinated water. ABB later assisted the automation of Dubai International Airport and began powering Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah as the UAE boosted its investments in large-scale projects.

ABB was chosen to power the Dubai Metro – the Middle East’s first automated metro system – because of its expertise in powering metro stations around the world, including the Delhi Metro and the Guangzhou and Shenzhen Metro lines. ABB designed and installed Substation Control and Monitoring Systems (SCMS) for Dubai Metro’s gas-insulated switchgear substations as part of a partnership with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

ABB also constructed the electrical power systems that allow the world’s tallest structure to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The world’s highest substation is located in the Burj Khalifa, allowing the facilities management team to control the power supply of 400 electrical loads on the site, including 57 elevators and a 24 megawatt (MW) air conditioning system.
