Cisco recently conducted a survey in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), involving over 21,000 participants across 12 countries, to explore consumer behaviors and expectations regarding broadband connectivity. The findings provide valuable insights into the demand for sustainable and secure broadband services, the increasing reliance on the internet for various aspects of life, and the need for improved cybersecurity measures.

One noteworthy discovery is that a significant majority of UAE consumers (92%) are willing to pay more for sustainable broadband connectivity, assuming there is no compromise on quality. This reflects a growing environmental consciousness, with 77% of respondents expressing concerns about the carbon footprint associated with their broadband usage. The survey highlights the importance of service providers incorporating sustainability into their infrastructure development to meet consumer expectations and align with the UAE’s focus on eco-friendly practices.

Broadband has become a critical part of daily life for UAE consumers, with 81% considering it as vital national infrastructure, alongside necessities like water and electricity. The survey also reveals a rise in remote and hybrid work models, with 62% of respondents now relying on their home internet for work or running a business, representing a 10% increase from the previous year. Furthermore, the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) is prevalent, as 46% of respondents have connected home entertainment devices and 36% use the internet to enhance home security. This emphasizes the need for continuous investment in network infrastructure to support the increasing demands of a digitally empowered society.

Security emerges as a top concern for UAE consumers due to their reliance on broadband for sensitive tasks like banking and work. Only 3% of respondents stated they take no measures to protect their home internet connection. The survey reveals that 38% of respondents prioritize security as they plan to upgrade their broadband services, closely following the desire for faster speeds (44%). However, it also indicates a lack of awareness regarding comprehensive security approaches, as 47% of respondents solely rely on internet passwords for protection. To address this, raising public awareness and promoting advanced security measures, such as multi-factor authentication, becomes crucial to safeguard users’ information and combat cyber threats.
