The “Green Charger” services for electric vehicles under Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) EV Green Charger initiative experienced a remarkable 59% surge in usage throughout the year 2023. This substantial increase, evident by the 1,145,427 charging sessions by registered electric vehicles as of December 31, 2023, reflects the initiative’s notable success in promoting environmentally friendly mobility in Dubai. Compared to the previous year, this marked a 59% upswing in charging sessions.

DEWA, through its EV Green Charger initiative, delivered 23,419.821 megawatt-hours of electricity for electric vehicle charging in Dubai from 2015 to the close of 2023. This power supported a cumulative distance of 117 million kilometers covered by electric vehicles. The initiative contributes significantly to the UAE’s standing as a leader in the region for EV adoption, showcasing one of the world’s highest ratios of charging stations to electric vehicles.

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s strategic goals related to sustainability, air quality, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Dubai has witnessed substantial growth in electric vehicle usage since 2015, with the number of electric vehicles reaching 25,929 by December 2023. This surge signifies a significant stride toward Dubai’s commitment to transitioning to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.

Under the initiative, the number of registered EV owners has surged from a mere 14 in 2015 to over 13,959 by the end of December 2023. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, emphasized the commitment to realizing the visionary objectives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Al Tayer highlighted the pivotal role of the initiative in supporting the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative 2030 and the National Electric Vehicles Policy.

To further facilitate EV charging, DEWA has deployed 382 EV Green Charging Stations across Dubai, featuring various charger types and dual charging outlets. These stations are strategically located and accessible 24/7, with their locations easily discoverable through DEWA’s website, smart app, and multiple digital platforms.

DEWA encourages customers to create an EV account through its digital platforms and allows them to utilize charging stations within an hour of vehicle registration. The introduction of the EV Green Charger User Dashboard enhances customer management of charging services, and even unregistered customers can use the guest mode feature for EV charging. DEWA remains committed to advancing the use of electric vehicles through the continuous development of green charging stations employing Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies.
