Fitbit will now require users to have a Google Account to operate new devices and features. This comes as Fitbit is shifting to a single account system meaning it will soon lose its support of Google sign-in.
Currently, Users can sign in to Fitbit.com using a username and password (also known as a Fitbit account) or “Continue with Google” (Google Account). The website offered Facebook sign-in as of 2021, however, it was soon and predictably decommissioned.
The website sign-in page of FitBit has been updated to show the below message:
“We are removing the option to log in to your account on fitbit.com with your Google credentials to support an improved experience coming soon.”
The company also wants all its users to remember their email addresses and password and are suggested to rest their passwords in case they have forgotten them or enter a new one.
Fitbit accounts will now be replaced with regular Google Accounts, eliminating the need for two separate systems. Although customers will be allowed to continue using their current Fitbit accounts until 2025, a Google Account will be required to access new features and set up devices.
Google highlights benefits including “industry-leading account security, centralised privacy settings for Fitbit user data, and more features from Google on Fitbit” in addition to access to new features. Users will need to agree to transmit their Fitbit user data from Fitbit to Google when the consolidation occurs.
A deadline for this transition has not been given by the company
