Google Cloud Opens New Cloud Region in KSA, Eyes $109B Economic Boost by 2030

Google Cloud has expanded its regional footprint with the inauguration of the Dammam Cloud Region, introducing advanced Google Cloud Platform services with high performance and low latency. This development caters to a diverse range of customers in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, encompassing public sector entities, large enterprises, SMEs, and startups. The initiative aligns with Google Cloud’s commitment to bolstering the technology landscape in the Middle East and supporting the Vision 2030 goals of Saudi Arabia.

The official launch, presided over by Google Cloud’s CEO Thomas Kurian and attended by key government officials and tech industry leaders, marked a significant milestone. Research conducted by Access Partnership, commissioned by Google Cloud, estimates that the new cloud region could contribute a cumulative USD 109 billion to the Saudi economy between 2024 and 2030, fostering economic growth and generating approximately 148,600 jobs by 2030.

During the launch, His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al Swaha, Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology, emphasized the strategic importance of Google Cloud’s investment in advancing the Kingdom’s computing hub ambitions and supporting digital entrepreneurship and AI-based innovation across sectors.

Thomas Kurian highlighted the transformative potential of the new cloud region, enabling organizations to harness data, leverage generative AI solutions, and foster a culture of innovation supported by modern, sustainable infrastructure and robust security measures.

Access Partnership’s research underscores the Dammam cloud region’s capacity to support the growth aspirations of 1.2 million SMEs in Saudi Arabia, aligning with Vision 2030’s aim for SMEs to contribute 35% to the GDP by 2030. Google for Startups Cloud Program, launching in the first quarter of 2024, will provide eligible startups with access to support, mentors, industry experts, and up to $200,000 USD in cloud credits over the initial two years.

Starting immediately, Google Cloud Platform Services are available to Saudi customers through CNTXT, a leading digital transformation company and Google Cloud’s exclusive reseller. CNTXT will collaborate with Google Cloud partners to accelerate digital transformation and growth in both public and private sectors.

Abdul Rahman Al Thehaiban, Managing Director, Middle East, Turkey and Africa, Google Cloud, affirmed the company’s commitment to leading the digital evolution in the region, while Bader Al Madi, Saudi Arabia Country Manager, expressed the goal of supporting the digital empowerment of businesses and individuals in Saudi Arabia through cloud technologies and AI.

Representatives from various sectors, including Saudia Airlines, Qiddiya & Saudi Entertainment Ventures, and Wamid, shared insights into how Google Cloud’s solutions have been instrumental in driving innovation, achieving business goals, and enhancing customer experiences in their respective industries.

The Dammam cloud region is now part of Google Cloud’s extensive global network, comprising 39 cloud regions and 118 zones, providing organizations in the region with key controls for high security, data residency, and compliance with local regulations.
