The universality of Emirati society in seven videos

The film segments in the “It’s Possible” series commemorate the UAE’s society, history, and culture’s pluralism and diversity by concentrating on the following themes:

The Story of Art: A group of artists from various origins living in the UAE talk about their creative inspirations, beliefs, and philosophies, as well as why art is the vehicle through which they express their identities. Interdisciplinary artist MajdAlloush, muralist Tarsila Schubert, and painter Maisoon Al Saleh appear in the video.

The Story of Food: Four food specialists’ diverse passions reflect both the modern UAE’s diversity of flavours and its role as a magnet for a wide range of international cuisines. In Fujairah, we meet a British oyster grower, an Ethiopian coffee roaster, an Egyptian barbecue pitmaster, and an Emirates chef whose profession allows him to combine his passion for food with his love for travel.

The story of Innovation: The UAE has harnessed, developed, and refined a slew of cutting-edge new technologies as part of its efforts to construct a knowledge-based economy. Dr. Lourdes Vega, Director of Khalifa University’s Research and Innovation Center, discusses her goal of developing clean energy solutions, while Sky Kurtz, CEO of Pure Harvest, explains how hydroponics can help with the triple threat of food security, water conservation, and economic diversification. We also meet Ayesha Sharafi, a Hope Probe spacecraft propulsion engineer who emphasises the significance of encouraging young people to pursue STEM careers.

The story of language: The United Arab Emirates is a multilingual country where Arabic coexists with English, Urdu, Hindi, and Tagalog. It’s also a site where its creative expression takes on new forms, whether through the Mime Studio of deaf actor Abdulsalam Zourob, Isobel Abulhoul’s efforts to start the Emirates Literature Festival, or Annabel Kantaria’s novels.

The story of Music: Music is undoubtedly the most powerful and immediately accessible form of cultural expression, and music producer and DJ Dany Nevile, rapper Saud Saleh, and taiko drummer Taryam Al Katheeri tell the tale of the Emirates as a site of interchange, sanctuary, and discovery.

The story of Performing Arts: Sima Dance Company’s fusion of classic and folkloric traditions, Jaysus Zain’s confrontational and combative poetry, and Amal Al Mansoori’s manga voiceovers are examples of how cultures mix and crash in the UAE’s creative corners.

The story of Sport: The United Arab Emirates is one of the world’s true sports centres, with world-class competitions and unrivalled facilities. As explorer Khalif Al Mazroui, UAE national team midfielder Areej Al Hammadi, and special needs coach and campaigner Holly Murphy demonstrate, sport can break down boundaries and offer chances.
