According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is currently in the development phase of a highly advanced artificial intelligence system. This new AI endeavor aims to rival the capabilities of OpenAI’s most advanced models. The report, citing insiders familiar with the project, suggests that Meta intends to unveil this cutting-edge AI model next year, and it is expected to significantly surpass the capabilities of their existing commercial model, Llama 2.

Llama 2, which was introduced by Meta in July and distributed through Microsoft’s Azure cloud services to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, served as a precursor to this ambitious project.

While specific details of the upcoming AI system are subject to change, its primary purpose is to empower other businesses in developing services that can generate sophisticated text, conduct in-depth analysis, and produce various other forms of output, as reported by the newspaper.

Meta’s timeline for training this new AI, referred to as a large language model, is set to commence in early 2024, according to the same report. At the time of reporting, Meta had not provided an official comment in response to a request from Reuters.

The generative AI market has been attracting businesses and enterprises seeking advanced capabilities and enhanced operational processes ever since the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the previous year. Furthermore, Bloomberg News previously reported that Apple is also making strides in the field of AI, working on offerings similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Apple has created its framework called ‘Ajax’ to build large language models and has been testing a chatbot internally, sometimes referred to as ‘Apple GPT’, as part of its AI endeavors.
