Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. unveiled today a service integration with Tesla set to be showcased at CES® 2024. This integration will link SmartThings Energy with various Tesla products, including the Powerwall home battery, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging solutions, and electric vehicles (EVs). Leveraging Tesla’s open APIs, this collaboration marks a significant step in expanding the connectivity of SmartThings Energy, aligning with Samsung’s overarching objective of providing consumers with more convenient and seamless home experiences.
Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team of Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics, highlighted the enhanced accessibility and connectivity for Tesla Energy’s customers. Through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices, users can now manage and monitor their homes’ power status in addition to the Tesla app, marking a crucial milestone for Samsung Electronics in extending their solutions beyond home appliances.
The primary consumer benefit of this partnership lies in SmartThings Energy’s ability to interface with Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging, and EVs. This connectivity allows SmartThings Energy to present information regarding users’ energy production, storage, and usage. Moreover, consumers gain improved preparedness for power disruptions and outages, as SmartThings Energy syncs with the Tesla app’s “Powerwall Storm Watch” function. In instances of extreme weather events such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users receive alerts through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and mobile devices, complementing notifications from the Tesla app. Furthermore, users can activate AI Energy Mode before and during power outages to optimize the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall. This collaborative effort represents a significant stride in creating a more resilient and interconnected smart home ecosystem for consumers.
Samsung’s integration of the Tesla API is a pivotal step in its ongoing commitment to advancing the Net Zero Home project and elevating the overall SmartThings user experience across various devices.
Drew Baglino from Tesla expressed enthusiasm about expanding the capabilities of their products to engage with other intelligent devices and software within customers’ homes. Tesla recently introduced FleetAPI, enabling developers to interact with Powerwall, Solar, Wall Connector, and vehicles. Samsung, being at the forefront of consumer smart home technology, has eagerly embraced this opportunity as an early developer. This collaboration allows customers to monitor grid connectivity status across multiple devices and intelligently manage home loads to optimize Powerwall energy usage when off the grid.
The unveiling of SmartThings Energy connected to Tesla Powerwall will take place at the Samsung booth during CES® 2024. While the actual service is currently in the development phase, its anticipated launch is set for the second quarter of 2024.
