Sony Middle East & Africa has announced the World of Film initiative to commemorate Sony’s heritage and ongoing support to the filmmaking industry. Sony is devoted to their creative journey every step of the way through the strength of their Alpha series interchangeable lens cameras and Cinema Line camera series, whether it is participation with high-profile blockbuster studios or an individual producing an indie film. The campaign will run until the end of the year, beginning on August 2, 2021.
Sony has been pushing the frontiers of filmmaking and staying at the forefront of cutting-edge cinematic technology for decades. Sony launched the HDW F900, the world’s first digital cinema camera, to Hollywood in 2000. The F900 was utilised to shoot blockbuster films in 100 percent digital cinematography, such as Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. Hundreds of theatrical, broadcast, cable, and streaming releases have been captured using Sony’s industry-leading VENICE. Sony’s film industry DNA and exceptional digital imaging prowess have been combined to create powerful creative tools like the Cinema Line and Alpha Series cameras, which capture emotion and unleash the true power of visual storytelling.
Sony’s extensive experience in the film industry has resulted in long-term partnerships with studios and filmmakers all around the world. Sony hopes that through involving the filmmaking community, the strength of Sony digital imaging technology will enable content makers to flourish.
Sony will honour a number of noteworthy filmmakers from various backgrounds and genres. Individual filmmakers to production houses from Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa are among them. Filmmakers and Sony Alpha Ambassadors and Collaborators from the region, including Mark Issa from the UAE, Khalifa and Salma Kassef from Egypt, Jacques Crafford, Ian Nieuwenhuizen and Adi van der Walt, Luke Bell and Hloni Coleman (XCIV), and Ofentse Mwase from South Africa, have joined the World of Film initiative.
Starting August 2, 2021, their films will be shown alongside exclusive behind-the-scenes production video. This clip will show their filmmaking process and experience, as well as the equipment that helped them realise their vision. In addition, beginning August 2, 2021, these creators will host workshops where they will share insights into how they realised their cinematic ambitions.
In addition, as part of the promotion, Sony will hold a filmmaking competition. The competition began on August 2, 2021, and will conclude on December 31, 2021. There are two categories in the competition. The Available Category is open to all applicants from participating regions, while the Student Category is only open to students enrolled in a full-time filmmaking programme.
All submissions must be made through the World of Film by Sony Middle East and Africa website, which can be found here. Each entry will be judged on its aesthetic merit in workmanship across a variety of filmmaking disciplines.
Before being judged regionally, winners will be decided on a local level. In January 2022, the local winners will be judged, while the regional winner will be judged in February 2022. The winners of the local prize will receive digital equipment. The regional winner will receive a cash award of USD$15,000 for the Open Category and USD$8,000 for the Student Category.
