Ciena has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to the environment by recently establishing science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These targets, which have gained approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), underscore Ciena’s dedication to minimizing its ecological footprint. The scope of Ciena’s science-based targets encompasses both its direct operational practices and its groundbreaking technological solutions, which have the potential to diminish the environmental impact of global networks. These targets are in harmony with the Paris Climate Agreement’s objective of restraining global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
– A resolute aim to curtail Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 80.6% by fiscal 2030, relative to fiscal 2019 levels.
– An intensity-based aspiration to reduce total Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions per unit of capacity shipped in Gb/s by 71.3% by fiscal 2030, based on fiscal 2019 levels.
These fresh greenhouse gas reduction targets augment Ciena’s prior aspiration to achieve carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, as well as certain Scope 3 emissions, by 2024—a goal that the company is progressing well towards. Additionally, Ciena remains unwavering in its commitment to sourcing 100% renewable energy for key facilities by the conclusion of 2023 and adopting packaging consisting of 70% recycled content by weight by 2025.
