Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reached a significant milestone by installing over one million smart water meters across the city, achieving a 100% installation rate. This achievement, accomplished by early June 2024, reflects DEWA’s dedication to advancing water management and service efficiency in Dubai.
The deployment of these smart water meters aligns with DEWA’s strategic goals to enhance operational efficiency and embrace cutting-edge technologies from the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The smart meter infrastructure adheres to the highest international technical standards, marking a significant step in DEWA’s efforts to develop a sophisticated smart grid.
The impact of these smart meters is profound, contributing to a reduction in water losses from 7.06% in early 2018 to 4.6% by the end of 2023. This reduction has saved 12.5 billion gallons of water, translating to AED 451.3 million in cost savings. DEWA’s investment in smart meter technology plays a crucial role in achieving Dubai’s sustainability goals and supports the city’s position as a global leader in the digital economy.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the authority’s commitment to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and growth. Al Tayer emphasized the importance of smart meters in enhancing DEWA’s infrastructure, reducing water waste, and supporting net-zero targets.
DEWA’s smart meter data management system is both secure and fully automated, providing real-time insights into consumption patterns and enabling proactive leak detection. The innovative Hydro Insight system, developed internally, allows DEWA to monitor and detect anomalies in smart meters within one hour. Additionally, the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) enhances the accuracy of meter readings and billing, with smart meter bills issued remotely through an advanced SAP platform.
This comprehensive deployment of smart water meters underscores DEWA’s commitment to advancing water management technology and supporting sustainable development in Dubai.
