The second edition of the Emirates Robotics Competition has drawn to a close, featuring the creative endeavors of 200 students hailing from 14 universities. Organized through a collaborative effort between Dubai Future Labs, Khalifa University, and the Rochester Institute of Technology, the event saw 53 teams competing across three main challenges centered on recycling and waste management.
The competition’s climax witnessed teams of three to six students vying for supremacy in crafting robots tailored for specific tasks. Judges, comprised of robotics and engineering experts, evaluated the ingenuity and functionality of the entries. Middlesex University Dubai emerged victorious in the first challenge, demonstrating their prowess in designing recycling robots adept at swiftly identifying and sorting various types of waste.
Rochester Institute of Technology claimed triumph in the second challenge, excelling in creating robots capable of swift garbage collection and disposal while navigating around obstacles. The ultimate challenge required teams to develop robots capable of extracting waste from water surfaces, with the top honors going to a team from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani).
The Emirates Robotics Competition epitomizes a strategic partnership between governmental bodies and educational institutions, aimed at nurturing a new breed of robotics developers within the UAE. By providing a platform for budding talents to exhibit their skills and innovation, the competition addresses pressing contemporary and future challenges.
Aligned with the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, the competition coincides with the Year of Sustainability, extended into 2024. Moreover, it aligns with the objectives of Dubai Future Labs’ ambitious Dubai Robotics and Automation Program. Initiated in late 2022 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the program aims to bolster the development, testing, and integration of robotics and automation technologies across various sectors. With a targeted goal of elevating the sector’s contribution to Dubai’s GDP to 9% within a decade, the program underscores Dubai’s vision for technological advancement and economic diversification.
