Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), the connectivity cloud company, announced it is expanding Project Galileo to help nonprofits and independent media monitor and control how AI services access content on their websites.

The program includes 750 journalists, independent news organizations, and other nonprofits supporting news gathering worldwide. Participants will now have access to Cloudflare’s Bot Management and AI Crawl Control services for free. These tools help protect websites from unwanted AI crawlers.

Nonprofits and news organizations, particularly those operating locally or in repressive societies, face challenges in transitioning to the AI-driven web. As more people rely on AI models for information, fewer visit the original websites. This threatens revenue, fundraising, and access to local news.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, stated, “We started Project Galileo to stop cyberattacks from suppressing journalists and human rights voices. Now, we want AI evolution to work in their favor, not against them.”

Since 2014, Project Galileo has protected nonprofits, journalists, human rights defenders, and vulnerable groups from cyber threats. Earlier this year, Cloudflare revealed tools for publishers to monitor AI crawler access. Now, these are being extended for free to more nonprofits and journalists.

Experts highlighted the impact on independent media. Meera Selva, CEO of Internews Europe, noted, “Providing robust tools to independent media isn’t just support – it’s a lifeline.” Sarah Gustavus Lim, Membership Director at LION, added that Cloudflare’s tools help members manage the evolving digital security landscape.

Ryan Powell, Head of Innovation and Media Business at International Press Institute, reported that monitoring AI crawling allows media to protect intellectual property while developing revenue streams, ensuring the survival of quality journalism.

  • Cloudflare expands Project Galileo to protect nonprofits and independent media.
