Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), a connectivity cloud company, announced a new partnership with Giga, a joint initiative by UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The collaboration aims to connect every school to the Internet and close the global digital divide.

Giga will now use real-time data from Cloudflare’s Speed Test solution to measure and monitor Internet connectivity at schools worldwide. This step will help governments and nonprofits implement better solutions where needed.

Reports show that around 1.3 billion children still lack home Internet access. Nearly 50 percent of students cannot use the Internet daily at school. This connectivity gap limits education and job opportunities for millions.

Cloudflare revealed it will run up to 10 million availability tests per month directly from schools. These tests will measure Internet speed, latency, and affordability.

  • Data will power Giga’s live open-source platform, Giga Maps.
  • Governments, private sector, and civil society will gain insights to improve school Internet connectivity.

“Cloudflare’s mission is to help build a better Internet, making it accessible to everyone,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. He added that helping UNICEF’s Giga measure school connectivity ensures millions of children can prepare for a digital future.

Thomas Davin, Global Director at UNICEF Office of Innovation, said connecting schools to the Internet is vital. He noted that Cloudflare will strengthen Giga’s data collection and improve decision-making for school connectivity investments.

Giga Maps allows governments to locate schools, monitor connectivity, and identify solutions and financing strategies. Cloudflare’s global network, with data centers in over 330 cities, minimizes latency and delivers accurate real-time assessments. This collaboration is expected to accelerate progress toward universal school connectivity.
