Portworx by Pure Storage has announced its new Kube Datastore, a modern VM architecture optimized for cloud-native deployments. The platform aims to simplify Kubernetes adoption for enterprises while maintaining familiar workflows.

Venkat Ramakrishnan, Vice President and GM of Portworx, explained that many CIOs face challenges migrating from VMware to Kubernetes due to rising costs, uncertain roadmaps, and cyber risks. “Portworx brings familiar architecture to Kubernetes, enabling enterprises to run lightweight edge VMs and VDI workloads without disruption,” he said.

The Kube Datastore, built for KubeVirt, offers intelligent storage abstraction, operational continuity, and flexible deployment across edge, Citrix VDI, or nested control planes. It allows smooth VMware-to-Kubernetes migration while retaining trusted workflows. Customers using Pure Storage FlashArray can leverage Rapid VM Migration to cut migration time.

Portworx is also partnering with global systems integrators like Wipro to help enterprises upskill teams and accelerate cloud-native adoption. The collaboration integrates Portworx as the foundational storage layer across all hosting platforms and Kubernetes variants. This approach enables intelligent replication, automated failover, and advanced protection features, including snapshots, backups, and disaster recovery.

The platform enhances cyber resilience by supporting granular VM file-level recovery in PX-Backup and synchronous disaster recovery with FlashArray ActiveCluster. These features help reduce outages, strengthen security, and accelerate recovery for critical workloads.

Portworx also aims to reduce TCO by mitigating CapEx and OpEx associated with traditional virtualization. The platform enables CIOs to run VMs and containers side by side on Kubernetes, improving operational agility, security, and cost efficiency.

Gary Chen, Research Director at IDC, noted that advanced storage capabilities are key to accelerating transitions from traditional virtualization to cloud-native environments. With Portworx, CIOs can modernize safely while securing data and empowering existing teams.

Key Points:

  • Kube Datastore optimizes cloud-native VM workloads on Kubernetes.
  • Collaboration with Wipro enhances enterprise adoption and data resilience.
  • PX-Backup and FlashArray ActiveCluster improve disaster recovery.
