SolarWinds, a provider of IT management software, has released its 2025 State of the DBA Report. The report revealed rising pressures on database administrators (DBAs) in hybrid cloud environments and a gap between executive perception and DBA reality. Insights came from over 1,000 IT professionals, including 500 executives and 500 DBAs.

As organizations adopt hybrid cloud and multi-environment systems, the DBA role has grown more critical and complex. The report revealed that one in three DBAs are considering leaving due to burnout. Experts say unified tools, AI support, and training can help DBAs focus on strategic initiatives and innovation.

The study found that:

  • DBAs manage diverse databases, with 57% on-premises, 31% in public cloud, and 12% in private cloud environments.
  • Firefighting dominates DBA tasks, with 27 out of 40 weekly hours spent on reactive work. Alert fatigue affects 75% of respondents.
  • AI tools are helping DBAs reduce manual tasks, improve performance diagnostics, and focus on high-impact work, though adoption challenges remain.

Kevin Kline, Database Management Systems Expert at SolarWinds, said, “DBAs face growing complexity due to hybrid cloud and enterprise IT architectures. Aligning teams with IT leadership is critical for success.”

The report highlights that organizations embracing hybrid cloud strategies must support DBAs with modern tools and AI-driven solutions to drive efficiency and business results.
