OpenAI announced on Thursday the launch of its highly anticipated GPT-5.2 artificial intelligence model. The move comes after CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued an internal “code red” in early December. Non-core projects were paused, and teams were redirected to accelerate GPT-5.2’s development.

The company revealed that GPT-5.2 brings notable improvements in general intelligence, coding, and long-context understanding. According to OpenAI, the new model will deliver greater economic value for users. It can create spreadsheets, build presentations, and handle complex multi-step projects more efficiently.

The launch follows Google’s release of its latest Gemini 3 AI in November. Alphabet highlighted Gemini 3’s lead on several popular AI performance leaderboards. However, Altman reported that “Gemini 3 has had less of an impact on our metrics than we feared” in a recent CNBC interview.

Disney also announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI. The media giant revealed that OpenAI can now use characters from Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises in its Sora AI video generator.

OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5.2 Instant, Thinking, and Pro will roll out in ChatGPT starting Thursday, initially for paid plans. The company reported no plans to remove GPT 5.1, GPT 5, or GPT 4.1 from its application programming interface.

This latest release highlights OpenAI’s focus on advanced AI capabilities and strategic partnerships. Analysts say GPT-5.2 could further strengthen OpenAI’s position in the competitive AI landscape.
