NTT DATA, a global provider of AI, digital business and IT services, today announced the release of its 2026 Global AI Report, titled A playbook for AI leaders. The report revealed how AI leaders are separating from competitors through clear strategy and disciplined execution.

The findings are based on benchmark research and a survey of 2,567 senior executives across 35 countries and 15 industries. NTT DATA reported that only 15% of participating organizations qualified as AI leaders. These organizations were defined by mature operating models, focused execution, and well-defined AI strategies. As a result, they reported significantly higher revenue growth and profit margins than their peers.

According to the report, AI leaders treat artificial intelligence as a core growth engine and align it closely with business strategy. As a result, they move faster and convert strategic focus into stronger financial returns. In addition, these organizations focus on a small number of high-value domains and redesign workflows end to end, rather than relying on surface-level AI additions.

The research also revealed that AI leaders create a flywheel effect. Early AI investments drive initial success, which in turn fuels reinvestment and sustained growth. Moreover, these organizations rebuild core applications with embedded AI to support long-term transformation.

“AI accountability now belongs in the boardroom and demands an enterprise-wide agenda,” said Yutaka Sasaki, President and CEO of NTT DATA Group. He added that a small group of AI leaders are already using AI to differentiate, grow, and reinvent how humans and machines create value together.

On execution, the report showed that AI leaders invest in secure, scalable infrastructure and address bottlenecks early. They also localize or relocate AI infrastructure to support private and sovereign AI requirements. Furthermore, these organizations use AI to amplify skilled employees rather than replace them.

Key execution factors highlighted in the report include:

  • Centralized AI governance with enterprise-wide oversight and dedicated Chief AI Officers
  • Company-wide change management to support AI adoption and reduce resistance
  • Strategic partnerships and outcome-based collaboration models to accelerate AI value

Abhijit Dubey, CEO and CAIO of NTT DATA, Inc., said that once AI and business strategies are aligned, focusing on one or two high-impact domains delivers disproportionate value. He noted that strong governance, modern infrastructure, and trusted partners help AI leaders turn pilots into profits and move ahead of the market.
