The U.S. government announced on Monday a major initiative focused on hiring engineers for two year federal roles, including professionals with artificial intelligence expertise, according to a senior Trump administration official.

The initiative was revealed as part of a broader effort to strengthen technology capacity inside government agencies. It focuses on bringing private sector level expertise into public service.

Scott Kupor, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, reported that the engineers will work on targeted projects across federal departments. These include building a new digital platform to support savings accounts for children under the Trump administration.

According to Kupor, the goal is to complete the first round of hiring by March 31. He said the government wants to benefit from highly skilled individuals working on some of the world’s most complex and difficult problems.

The program is part of the Trump administration’s artificial intelligence agenda. That effort is being led in part by former PayPal executive David Sacks, Reuters reported.

Kupor also revealed that several major technology companies have pledged to consider program alumni for future roles. The companies include Apple, Google, and Nvidia, among others, according to the program’s website.

The U.S. government hiring engineers initiative is seeking candidates with backgrounds in software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analytics, the website showed.

A similar program was launched under former President Joe Biden to bring AI professionals into government roles. That initiative resulted in about 200 hires, according to a 2024 statement from the Biden administration.

Kupor said about 75 of those employees remain in government roles, as the latest hiring engineers push aims to expand federal technology talent and long term digital capacity.
