The World Future Energy Summit, held at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi from 13th-15th January as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week hosted by Masdar, will highlight the role of green hydrogen in industrial decarbonization.

The Summit announced that industry experts, policymakers, and investors from the UAE and UK will explore collaborative solutions. The UK aims to expand low-carbon hydrogen production to 10GW by 2030, creating opportunities for strategic partnerships and cross-border investment.

It was reported that the UAE’s expertise in renewable energy and large-scale Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects can support the UK’s green hydrogen market. Analysts note that the hydrogen market has moved into a more disciplined phase, where scale, technical expertise, and investment commitment will determine project success.

Sarah Jones, UK Minister of State for Industry, confirmed, “Hydrogen must be at the heart of our plans to grow the economy and reach net zero by 2050. Government and industry are delivering real projects to kickstart the UK hydrogen economy.”

Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy and Secretary General of the Arab Energy Club, added that hydrogen is a natural extension of the UAE-UK partnership, supporting industrial decarbonization and economic growth.

The Summit revealed that UK funding projections include £9 billion (AED44.6 billion) from the private sector for 27 hydrogen projects, alongside £500 million of public investment to develop hydrogen infrastructure.

UAE projects such as the Ta’ziz Industrial Hub and the gigawatt-scale hub in the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD) are set to expand domestic production. Private UAE investors have also committed £18.5 billion to a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Dakhla, Morocco, with a 1 million tonnes per year capacity.

Cornelius Matthes, CEO of Dii Desert Energy, reported that the UAE aims to produce 1.4 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2031. The World Future Energy Summit 2026 will feature the Green Hydrogen Innovation Hub, showcasing over 20 startups with solutions to accelerate global adoption.

With careful planning and cooperation, the UAE and UK are positioned to strengthen green hydrogen deployment and investment, supporting the global transition to cleaner energy.

Key Points:

  • UAE and UK collaborate to scale green hydrogen production.
  • UK targets 10GW low-carbon hydrogen by 2030 with £9 billion private funding.
