Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced the adoption of advanced smart water technologies and a robust digital infrastructure to enhance the operation and monitoring of its water networks. The system enables round-the-clock remote monitoring and control through the ‘Open Platform Communication Gateway for Data Exchange Between Multiple Water OT Systems’, which has been patented in the UAE.

DEWA reported that the solution is currently deployed within its Water and Civil Division. Early results include cost savings, faster implementation of operational procedures, improved data exchange across different systems, and quicker decision-making in sensitive environments.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, revealed that the initiative aligns with the UAE’s vision to develop future-ready cities based on innovation and sustainability. He added that it supports DEWA’s digital transformation journey and leverages technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to enhance water system efficiency and ensure service continuity.

The system, developed with over 2,500 lines of software code on the open-source Python platform, operates with full redundancy. It includes main and emergency disaster recovery centres and real-time application servers running 24/7. The technology can read and extract data from more than 150,000 database entries in under 30 seconds.

Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water and Civil at DEWA, reported that the solution unifies operational data into a single, resilient, and secure platform. It improves monitoring efficiency, reduces operational time, and enhances network reliability, supporting service sustainability while keeping pace with Dubai’s urban growth.

Key points:

  • Patented gateway enables round-the-clock monitoring and control of water networks.
  • System integrates AI, IoT, and open-source Python to enhance operational efficiency.
