The South Korea ICT exports more than doubled in February compared with the same month last year, driven by a surge in semiconductor shipments amid the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, according to data released on Thursday.

Outbound shipments of information and communication technology (ICT) products reached $33.6 billion in February. This marks a sharp increase from $16.5 billion recorded a year earlier, based on data compiled by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The increase came despite fewer working days during the month. Notably, it represents the highest export value ever recorded for any February.

Meanwhile, ICT imports also rose. Imports increased 19.6 percent year-on-year to reach $13 billion.

As a result, the sector posted a trade surplus of $20.5 billion.

In addition, ICT exports accounted for 49.8 percent of the country’s total exports of $67.45 billion in February. This highlights the sector’s strong contribution to the national economy.

The ministry said the figures reaffirm the ICT sector’s reputation as a key industry driving the country’s economic growth, with Korea ICT continuing to play a central role in export performance.
