Red Hat is expanding its edge computing footprint through a new global collaboration with Panasonic Connect. The partnership is designed to redefine ruggedized edge computing by enabling real time data processing at the edge. Red Hat plays a central role in delivering a unified and secure platform for industrial and mission critical environments.

Under the collaboration, Panasonic Connect will preload Red Hat Device Edge on Panasonic TOUGHBOOK devices. As a result, customers will get out of the box access to a unified edge computing platform. This supports real time data processing across industrial automation, smart manufacturing, and defense sector operations.

Panasonic TOUGHBOOK devices are rugged laptops and tablets designed for extreme environments. They are optimized for specialized edge computing use cases. Moreover, they address strict security and compliance requirements across government, defense, and manufacturing sectors.

Red Hat Device Edge combines several enterprise technologies. It includes an enterprise ready and supported distribution of MicroShift, a lightweight Kubernetes distribution derived from Red Hat OpenShift edge capabilities. In addition, it integrates Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to support orchestration and automation at scale.

With this setup, Panasonic TOUGHBOOK devices deliver faster and simplified deployment. Therefore, organizations can reduce time to value while maintaining mission critical security standards. The solution also offers enhanced flexibility and customization for demanding edge workloads.

Furthermore, it ensures operational resilience in extreme and disconnected environments. The rugged hardware of TOUGHBOOK devices, combined with the built in security capabilities of Red Hat Device Edge, strengthens reliability for remote and harsh conditions.

Organizations will also be able to choose the level of Red Hat Device Edge support based on operational needs. Notably, the solution is now generally available worldwide, enabling broader adoption across key industries.

Kelly Switt, Senior Director, Industrial Business at Red Hat, said the collaboration transforms rugged devices into intelligent and self sufficient edge nodes. She added that it supports mobile command and control, tactical communications, drone control, real time intelligence, and secure data processing in challenging environments.

Koji Higashitani, Senior Manager, Mobile Solutions Business Division at Panasonic Connect, stated that the partnership expands secure edge computing options out of the box. He emphasized its value for government, defense, and manufacturing customers seeking real time processing and industrial automation.
