Cloudflare Radar has released new analysis showing how the 2026 FIFA World Cup reshaped global Internet traffic patterns as billions of football fans changed their online behavior during the tournament. The insights are based on traffic observed across Cloudflare’s global network and highlight how one of the world’s biggest sporting events influenced Internet activity in real time.

The report found that Internet traffic dropped significantly as matches kicked off. Millions of viewers shifted their attention to live broadcasts, leading to noticeable declines in online activity across participating countries and many international markets. However, traffic rebounded during halftime and increased again after matches ended.

According to Cloudflare Radar, Argentina had the greatest impact on global Internet activity during the tournament. The country’s matches caused the largest worldwide traffic shifts, with Internet traffic in a typical country deviating by around 17% whenever Argentina played. This was higher than the impact of any other national team.

Interestingly, the biggest Internet event of the tournament was not the final. Instead, Argentina’s quarterfinal match against Switzerland generated the largest global change in Internet traffic, surpassing even the championship match in its effect on online behavior.

The analysis also showed that Internet traffic patterns varied depending on local viewing schedules. Since matches were played across multiple North American time zones, countries experienced different peaks and drops in Internet usage based on local broadcast times. In several regions, late-night matches created unusual traffic trends outside normal daily usage patterns.

Another notable finding was the “time-zone paradox.” The report found that the largest changes in Internet activity occurred when matches were broadcast between midnight and 8 a.m. local time. Although these are typically low-traffic hours, fans staying awake or waking early to watch matches pushed Internet traffic well above normal levels. In some countries, traffic more than doubled during these periods.

Cloudflare Radar also identified what it called the “three-minute phenomenon.” Even short hydration breaks during matches resulted in noticeable spikes in Internet activity, as viewers briefly returned online before the game resumed.

In addition, the company observed a significant increase in requests to sports betting and gambling websites throughout the tournament compared with the months leading up to the competition. This highlighted increased online engagement beyond match streaming and live coverage.

The complete analysis examines Internet traffic trends across every stage of the tournament during June and July 2026. It provides insights into how fans worldwide collectively influenced online activity throughout the event.
