Meta has called on TikTok and YouTube to adopt stronger teen safeguards after reaching an agreement with a bipartisan group of 52 attorneys general across US states, territories, and the District of Columbia.

The agreement builds on Meta’s ongoing efforts to empower parents and support teenagers. It outlines a path toward industry-wide commitments aimed at giving parents greater control over how teens use social media apps.

Under the proposed measures, Meta will introduce a two-hour daily time limit for teens. Access to its apps will also be turned off by default at night.

In addition, notifications will be disabled during school hours. Teens will receive clear prompts and notifications every 15 minutes of continuous screen time.

The agreement also includes new parental supervision controls. These will allow parents to decide how their teens use Meta’s apps.

However, Meta said these teen safeguards will only be effective if other major platforms adopt similar measures. The company specifically urged TikTok and YouTube to introduce the same protections.

Meta said teens who face restrictions on one app may simply move to another platform. Therefore, it argued that broader industry adoption is necessary to achieve meaningful progress.

The company is now calling on TikTok and YouTube to join the effort and establish common teen safeguards across major platforms, with the aim of better supporting teens and empowering parents.
