A recent survey conducted across 10 African and Middle Eastern countries involving 1,300 respondents uncovered concerning trust in generative AI.

The findings showed that 63% of participants are willing to share personal information with AI tools. A significant 83% expressed confidence in the accuracy and reliability of these technologies.

Anna Collard, SVP of Content Strategy and Evangelist at KnowBe4 AFRICA, highlighted the need for better user training. She stressed the risks of over-trusting generative AI and called for more awareness among users about its potential dangers.

Since its release in late 2022, ChatGPT has revolutionized work processes by providing quick content generation and seamless assistance. However, rapid AI adoption has sparked growing concerns about security and privacy risks, particularly in terms of how people trust these tools with sensitive information.

Collard points out that while generative AI offers valuable opportunities for users and organizations across Africa, it also introduces significant risks. She emphasizes that users must weigh both the benefits and dangers of relying on generative AI in their daily tasks.

The survey, conducted in 10 African countries, revealed that generative AI is widely used for purposes like research, composing emails, and generating creative content. Despite the advantages perceived by users, there is still a gap in understanding the security risks, particularly in relation to cybersecurity and data privacy concerns.

One alarming finding from the survey was the ease with which users share sensitive personal data with AI tools. Nearly two-thirds of users across the surveyed countries felt comfortable sharing personal information with AI, demonstrating a concerning level of trust in these technologies. This behavior exposes users to potential security breaches and misuse of their data.

Furthermore, the survey revealed that many organizations have yet to develop comprehensive policies to address the unique challenges posed by generative AI. Nearly half of the respondents reported that their organizations lacked clear guidelines to manage and mitigate the risks associated with the adoption of AI-driven tools, leaving employees vulnerable to exploitation or misuse.

One of the most concerning issues raised by the survey is the rise of deepfakes, which are AI-generated videos or images designed to deceive viewers. While deepfakes can be used for harmless entertainment, they also pose serious risks, such as enabling scams, defamation, and political manipulation. Unfortunately, many organizations are not fully aware of the dangers posed by deepfakes, and awareness and training in this area remain limited.

Collard emphasized the urgency of adopting a “zero-trust” mindset when dealing with AI tools and data-sharing practices. A zero-trust approach would ensure that no data or information is trusted by default, even if it comes from internal sources. This would reduce the potential for data breaches, scams, and manipulation.

She also urged organizations to implement comprehensive training initiatives for employees, educating them on the risks associated with generative AI tools. With the growing reliance on AI in various sectors, including government, education, healthcare, and business, it is essential that users and organizations alike understand the importance of safeguarding their data and digital assets.

Collard’s call to action focuses on the need to empower users to make informed decisions about when and how they use AI tools. As AI technologies continue to evolve and play a more central role in shaping the digital landscape, it is critical that individuals and businesses stay ahead of emerging threats and adopt proactive measures to protect themselves.
