Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced a pilot project that uses artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to monitor and identify random waste dumping sites across the emirate. The initiative aims to raise the efficiency of the waste management system and strengthen environmental monitoring through AI waste solutions.

The project, reported as the first of its kind in the UAE, relies on AI models and satellite image analysis to shift from traditional field inspections to automated, data-driven monitoring. As a result, the system can analyze large volumes of data and predict potential environmental violations before they escalate.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, said the project reflects the agency’s transition toward smart and sustainable environmental systems. She added that it aligns with the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and supports Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 by using digital innovation and AI waste monitoring to improve environmental quality and long-term sustainability.

If expanded, the project is expected to enhance proactive monitoring of environmental violations. Through intelligent satellite analysis, authorities can intervene early to limit environmental damage and improve overall compliance.

The initiative also contributes to improving waste management efficiency, strengthening coordination among government entities, and reducing illegal dumping, which helps enhance public satisfaction and environmental appearance.

Engineer Faisal Al Hammadi, Executive Director of the Environmental Quality Sector at EAD, revealed that the pilot was implemented in Al Bukariyah in the Al Ain Region. He reported that the AI waste system achieved over 90 percent accuracy in detecting illegal dumping sites.

  • The system identified 150 waste sites, compared to 43 sites found through field inspections during the same period.
  • AI models also classified waste types accurately and tracked changes in dumping areas over previous years.

Following detection, EAD coordinated with relevant authorities to remove waste and restore affected sites. The agency continues monitoring these areas after cleanup to prevent recurrence and ensure long-term environmental protection.

The project strengthens EAD’s regulatory and legislative role by using smart digital tools based on satellite imagery and geographic data. This approach supports environmental protection, natural resource sustainability, and reduced risks to public health.

EAD showcased the project at the International Solid Waste Association World Conference (ISWA 2025) in Argentina. The initiative received positive feedback from participating experts, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s use of AI waste technologies in environmental monitoring.

Based on the pilot’s success, the agency announced plans to expand the project across the emirate. The next phase will include a central platform for smart environmental monitoring powered by AI waste analytics and satellite data to support sustainability goals and integrated government operations.
