AVEVA has announced a dedicated three-year research project with IMD Business School focused on how organisations can use industrial AI and industrial intelligence to build, manage and scale business ecosystems.

The programme will conduct in-depth research on how companies can integrate data-driven insights, industrial AI and human expertise to unlock value across ecosystems. The initiative was revealed as part of AVEVA’s broader focus on industrial intelligence and digital transformation.

The research project will be led by IMD Professors Michael Wade and Mark Greeven. It will examine emerging trends and best practices across sectors such as manufacturing, energy, transport and data centres. According to the announcement, the goal is to help organisations extract insights from data, break down silos, empower workers and support innovation at scale.

Key areas of emphasis throughout the programme include:

  • The role of industrial AI in managing business ecosystems
  • How global business networks can accelerate the energy transition and circularity
  • The evolution of ecosystem-powered business models and digital partnerships

Caspar Herzberg, CEO of AVEVA, said the collaboration combines technical industrial expertise with applied academic research. He noted that the project will explore people, process and technology enablers that support connected ecosystems, productivity and operational efficiency. He also reported that insights from executives and industry practitioners worldwide will help identify success factors for resilience and sustainability.

Stefan Michel, Dean of Faculty and Research at IMD, stated that business ecosystems are evolving rapidly. He added that the project aims to deliver applied research grounded in real-world experience, offering practical frameworks to address challenges faced by decision-makers using industrial AI.
