Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET) announced that The Astro Technology Company team, the creators of the Astro framework, will be joining Cloudflare. Astro is a popular JavaScript web framework used by brands like Unilever, Visa, and NBC News, as well as hundreds of thousands of developers, to build fast, content-driven websites. Cloudflare confirmed that Astro will remain open source to ensure its long-term growth.

The companies reported that with the Astro team joining Cloudflare, they aim to secure a sustainable future for the framework. Search engines prioritize fast-loading pages, and websites that rely heavily on JavaScript often struggle to deliver speed, affecting rankings and conversions. Astro loads only the code needed to display a page, making it suitable for high-performance websites.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, said the acquisition protects and invests in open-source tools. He revealed that Cloudflare is committed to ensuring Astro continues to be a top framework for content-driven websites for years to come.

Fred Schott, CEO of The Astro Technology Company, reported that joining Cloudflare will accelerate Astro’s development at a larger scale. Astro will remain the best way for developers to build content-driven websites, whether hosted on Cloudflare or elsewhere.

  • Astro supports major platforms like Webflow and Wix running on Cloudflare.
  • The beta release of Astro 6 brings additional JavaScript runtime support, improved performance, and faster build times.
  • Cloudflare will continue backing open-source contributions via the Astro Ecosystem Fund with partners such as Webflow, Netlify, Wix, and Sentry.
