CPX Holding, a provider of cyber and physical security solutions, has announced the release of a new whitepaper titled “Securing Operational Technology with Trust and Collaboration.”

The whitepaper offers an in-depth look at the cybersecurity challenges facing Operational Technology (OT) environments. It also provides actionable recommendations for organizations aiming to modernize securely.

As critical infrastructure sectors such as energy, transportation, manufacturing, and water treatment become more connected through technologies like cloud, IoT, and AI, CPX Holding reported that traditional IT security models are no longer effective or safe for OT.

The paper highlights key incidents that demonstrate the risks of applying IT-centric solutions to OT systems. These include:

• The Triton malware targeting safety systems
• The 3CX supply chain compromise
• The recent Norwegian Dam breach exposing hidden vulnerabilities

CPX emphasized the need to adopt a ‘cybersecurity by design’ approach early in the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) lifecycle. According to the company, retrofitting controls after deployment is no longer sufficient to ensure resilience in industrial environments.

Azeem Aleem, Global Executive Director of Cyber Resilience Services at CPX, stated that organizations must stop treating OT like IT. He stressed that OT environments require trust, context, and collaboration to secure critical infrastructure.

The whitepaper also revealed a growing skills gap. There is a shortage of cross-disciplinary advisors who understand both industrial operations and cybersecurity. To address this, the paper outlines eight essential competencies, including:

• Expertise in industrial control systems (ICS)
• Support for secure digital transformation
• Recognition of IT solution limitations in OT environments

CPX Holding called on regulators, technology vendors, operators, and the broader security community to collaborate. The company urged stakeholders to move away from outdated strategies and build trust-driven approaches aligned with today’s industrial threat landscape.
