Dubai Municipality has announced the pilot phase of a smart camera system as part of its “Smart Waste Management” framework. The initiative aims to improve public cleanliness monitoring and speed up responses to violations.

The system relies on artificial intelligence and real-time data analysis to enhance oversight and enforcement. The pilot includes the installation of smart cameras on several waste collection and transportation vehicles. The project is designed to monitor cleanliness on roads and in residential areas, as well as identify illegal waste dumping near containers, sidewalks, and public squares.

Captured images are analyzed instantly and displayed on interactive digital dashboards. This allows field teams to respond swiftly to violations.

The system monitors a range of negative behaviors, including littering in public areas, which carries fines of up to AED500. It also tracks improper disposal of furniture, bulky waste, and other practices that contribute to waste accumulation.

Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, reported that the project supports data-driven decision-making and sustainable urban policies. Engineer Adel Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, revealed that the system documents violations accurately while protecting community privacy, in line with Dubai’s smart city and digital transformation goals.

The pilot phase is part of Dubai Municipality’s efforts to support the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041. The outcomes will be evaluated before expanding the system further.
