Ericsson and OPPO have entered into a landmark multi-year global patent cross-license agreement, marking a significant advancement in cellular technology. This agreement includes a comprehensive cross-license for essential patents related to cellular standards, including 5G. As part of the deal, OPPO, a global smartphone manufacturer with a strong presence in both developed and emerging markets, will make royalty payments to Ericsson.

In addition to the patent licensing, the two companies will collaborate on various 5G-related projects. This partnership involves device testing, customer engagements, and marketing activities designed to accelerate 5G innovations and enhance user experiences.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating, “This royalty-bearing license agreement with OPPO allows Ericsson to further invest in essential communications technologies. It demonstrates the effective functioning of the patent licensing industry and the mutual respect for each other’s patent portfolios. We look forward to increasing our IPR revenues through additional 5G agreements and exploring new licensing opportunities in IoT and consumer electronics.”

The agreement reflects standard global practices where companies using cellular technologies, including 5G, require licensing to avoid patent infringement and to compensate patent holders for their R&D investments. The financial impact of this agreement has already been incorporated into Ericsson’s Q2 2024 financial results.

Ericsson’s extensive patent portfolio, which includes over 60,000 granted patents, underscores its leadership in mobile technology standards. With substantial annual investments exceeding SEK 45 billion in R&D, Ericsson remains at the forefront of 5G advancements and other key technological developments.
