The European Commission is considering tougher rules for WhatsApp. The move could make the messaging platform more responsible for tackling illegal and harmful content across the European Union.

According to Reuters, a commission spokesperson announced on Friday that regulators are reviewing whether WhatsApp should be classified as a very large online platform under the Digital Services Act.

The review follows WhatsApp’s disclosure of user numbers above the Digital Services Act threshold. These figures were revealed in February 2025, Reuters reported.

As a result, WhatsApp could face increased legal obligations. These would include stronger measures to identify, manage, and reduce harmful or illegal content on the platform.

Speaking to reporters, commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said a future designation has not been ruled out. He confirmed that the assessment process is actively underway.

If approved, the new status would place WhatsApp under stricter regulatory oversight. This would require greater transparency and regular risk assessments.

The European Commission has been expanding scrutiny of major digital platforms. This is part of broader efforts to strengthen online safety and platform accountability.

For now, no final decision has been announced. However, Reuters said discussions are ongoing and further updates are expected.
