Huawei, in collaboration with the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation-Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT) and the Oman National CERT, has announced the release of the OIC-CERT Software Supply Chain Security Framework. This framework is a vital tool for OIC member states to strengthen software supply chain security and ensure end-to-end cybersecurity.

The initiative comes as cybersecurity takes center stage for businesses in the Middle East, with 55% of companies in the region prioritizing efforts to mitigate digital and technology risks over the next year, according to PwC. This surpasses the global average of 53%. Cyber risks remain a significant concern, with 42% of regional businesses focusing on addressing these threats.

Developed by the OIC-CERT Supply Chain Security working group, co-chaired by the Oman National CERT and Huawei, the framework addresses the increasing complexity of software systems and the growing risks of supply chain attacks. It offers guidance for regulatory authorities in OIC member states to establish policies that ensure robust security for software manufacturers and service providers.

The framework provides a holistic approach to managing software supply chain security, covering key areas such as supplier cybersecurity management, open-source software oversight, and R&D security. It helps organizations implement security measures across the entire software lifecycle, from supplier evaluation to securing development and deployment processes. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of managing open-source software components and integrating security practices into research, development, and production environments.

Aloysius Cheang, Chief Security Officer for Huawei in the Middle East and Central Asia, expressed Huawei’s commitment to advancing cybersecurity: “Huawei is dedicated to collaborating with global partners to enhance cybersecurity for all. This framework is a major step toward strengthening software supply chain security across OIC member states. By sharing best practices, we can create a more secure and trustworthy digital environment.”

Dr. Saleh Said Al Hashmi of Oman National CERT highlighted the significance of the framework: “In today’s interconnected world, software supply chain security is crucial. This framework provides a strong foundation for OIC member states to build resilient digital economies. Our collaboration with Huawei integrates their expertise to develop comprehensive guidelines that address evolving threats. By adopting these measures, nations can mitigate risks and protect critical infrastructure.”

The release of this framework is timely, as software supply chain attacks continue to rise and pose significant threats to organizations and nations. By prioritizing software supply chain security, OIC member states can protect their digital assets, enhance resilience, and build trust in an increasingly interconnected digital world.

Huawei’s ongoing commitment to cybersecurity and collaboration with organizations like OIC-CERT underscores its dedication to creating a secure and trustworthy cyberspace.
