Meta Platforms on Wednesday unveiled Muse Spark, the first artificial intelligence model from a team it assembled last year to catch up with rivals in the Meta AI race.

Superintelligence refers to AI machines that could outthink humans. Meanwhile, Muse Spark is the first in a new series of models, known internally as Avocado, from that team.

The model, which marks the company’s first release in about a year, will initially be available only on the Meta AI app and website. In the coming weeks, it will replace the existing Llama models powering chatbots on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Meta’s smart glasses.

“This initial model is small and fast by design, yet capable enough to reason through complex questions in science, math, and health,” the company said in a blog post. It added that the model serves as a strong foundation, with the next generation already in development.

In addition, Muse Spark can assist users with practical tasks. For example, it can estimate calories in a meal from a photo. It can also superimpose an image of a mug on a shelf to preview how it looks.

Furthermore, Meta said users can rely on the model for planning activities. One agent can draft a travel itinerary, while another can suggest kid-friendly options for families.

Overall, the launch highlights how Meta AI continues to expand its capabilities across apps and devices.
