Microsoft Excel has announced two new import functions designed to simplify how users bring external data into spreadsheets. The functions, IMPORTTEXT and IMPORTCSV, allow text and CSV files to be imported directly using formulas.

Microsoft Excel revealed that the new features reduce the need for manual import tools. Instead, users can pull in external text-based data through formulas that remain connected to the source files.

As a result, the imported data updates automatically when the source file changes. This improves accuracy and reduces repetitive work. The functions are built on Excel’s dynamic arrays, allowing data to expand automatically to fit its contents.

Meanwhile, IMPORTTEXT provides advanced options for handling different text formats. It supports delimiter selection, encoding control, and flexible parsing. In comparison, IMPORTCSV offers a simpler approach focused specifically on comma-separated files.

According to Microsoft, both functions generate refreshable arrays that stay linked to the original data source. This makes ongoing updates faster and more efficient.

The company also reported that these features are currently rolling out to Microsoft 365 Insider subscribers. They are designed to complement Power Query rather than replace it.

Key highlights include:

  • Formula-based importing of text and CSV files
  • Real-time data refresh using dynamic arrays
  • A lightweight alternative for everyday import tasks

Microsoft stated that the update is aimed at improving daily data handling in Excel while maintaining compatibility with existing tools.
