NTT DATA, digital business and technology services, has announced the appointment of Vinesh Maharaj as Director of Smart Manufacturing & Industry for the Middle East and Africa region.

This move reflects NTT DATA’s continued commitment to advancing key industry verticals. The manufacturing vertical follows the successful launch of the company’s Retail and Financial Services practices earlier in 2024.

Vinesh Maharaj brings over 30 years of experience in industrial automation, IT/OT integration, Manufacturing Execution Systems, and Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies. He is also skilled in applying predictive AI for industrial growth.

He is a professionally registered engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and a Certified Director with the Institute of Directors of South Africa (IoDSA). Maharaj has held leadership roles across the energy, automotive, consumer goods, and industrial manufacturing sectors. Most recently, he worked as a Management Consultant at a Big 4 firm.

Additionally, he serves on the Exco and advises the Board of Directors of the Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Mechatronics and Computer Engineering (SAIMC).

Alan Turnley-Jones, CEO of NTT DATA Middle East and Africa, said the appointment underscores the company’s focus on high-potential growth markets. He added that NTT DATA will continue to drive strategic expansion across the MEA region.

Manufacturing is among the most promising sectors for digital transformation. Globally, the industry is valued at over $16 trillion. In South Africa, it contributes 13% to GDP, led by automotive, food and beverages, and machinery. Across Africa, the manufacturing sector accounts for around 10% of GDP, with expectations for growth driven by localisation, reforms, and digital investment.

However, many manufacturers still face challenges such as:

  • Outdated infrastructure and fragmented systems
  • Evolving cybersecurity threats
  • Talent shortages and siloed decision-making

Despite these hurdles, the potential for transformation is significant. Manufacturers can now use automation and predictive AI to improve operations, enhance supply chains, and enable real-time, data-driven decisions. Sustainability is also gaining importance as businesses seek environmentally responsible operations.

With Maharaj’s expertise and NTT DATA’s global capabilities, the company is positioned to help manufacturers boost digital maturity and remain competitive worldwide.
