OpenAI announced on Thursday the launch of GPT-5, its latest artificial intelligence model. The company said GPT-5 will be available to all 700 million ChatGPT users worldwide.

The GPT series powers the ChatGPT chatbot. OpenAI revealed that GPT-5 aims to attract more enterprise customers, expanding its use beyond consumers. The company noted that GPT-5 excels in software development, writing, health-related queries, and finance.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, told reporters that GPT-5 is the first mainline model that can answer questions at what he described as a “PhD-level” across a wide range of topics. He added that one of its key features is the ability to produce high-quality software instantly, a concept the company calls “software on demand.”

In demonstrations, OpenAI showed GPT-5 creating fully functional software from text prompts, a process also referred to as “vibe coding.”

The launch comes amid questions about the commercial viability of large-scale AI investment. Economics writer Noah Smith reported that while consumer spending on AI has been strong, enterprise spending remains weak.

  • Consumer spending on AI is robust due to ChatGPT’s popularity
  • Enterprise adoption is slower, raising concerns over return on investment

Smith noted that consumer spending alone will not cover the large costs of AI data centers.

OpenAI emphasized that GPT-5 marks a step forward from GPT-4. However, the company said it is not advanced enough to replace humans. Altman stated that GPT-5 still cannot learn on its own, which remains a critical factor in reaching human-level AI capabilities.
