OpenAI is developing a new code hosting platform to rival GitHub, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing a report by The Information that referenced a person with knowledge of the project.

The move follows a rise in service disruptions encountered by OpenAI engineers in recent months. During those incidents, GitHub was rendered unavailable, ultimately prompting the decision to explore building a new product, according to the report.

However, the project remains in its early stages. It is unlikely to be completed for several months.

Employees involved in the initiative have considered making the code repository available for purchase to OpenAI’s existing customer base, the report said.

Reuters could not independently verify the information. OpenAI, GitHub and Microsoft did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

If OpenAI moves forward with selling the product, it would mark a direct challenge to Microsoft, which holds a significant stake in the artificial intelligence company.

Meanwhile, OpenAI’s latest funding round valued it at $840 billion. Big Tech firms and Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank participated in the $110 billion raise, signaling that the AI investment race remains active despite recent concerns about a valuation bubble.

Any eventual launch of a competing platform would represent a notable strategic expansion for OpenAI, as reported by Reuters.
