Robots Lead in Transforming Complex Liver Surgeries: Study

A groundbreaking study suggests that robotic-assisted surgeries may be the optimal choice for complex liver operations.

Surgeons at a prominent New York City hospital analyzed 353 liver surgeries performed between 2017 and 2023. The procedures included 112 open surgeries (large incisions), 107 laparoscopic surgeries, and 134 robotic-assisted surgeries, according to Reuters.

The study revealed significant benefits for robotic and laparoscopic approaches over traditional open surgeries. After adjusting for patient risk factors and case complexities, robotic and laparoscopic procedures resulted in 39% and 43% shorter median hospital stays, respectively. Additionally, these methods lowered the odds of complications by 89% and 62% compared to open surgeries.

Notably, robotic-assisted surgeries were 87% less likely to require conversion to open surgery mid-operation compared to laparoscopic procedures. The findings, published in Surgical Endoscopy, highlight the potential of robotic systems to enhance precision and reduce risks in complex surgical cases.
