World Backup Day highlights the importance of reliable data backup, with Toshiba emphasizing the value of external hard drives alongside cloud solutions.

Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH marked March 31 as a reminder of the true value of backups. The company noted that many users only realise the importance of backups after losing access to their data.

Rainer W. Kaese, Senior Manager of HDD Business Development at Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH, shared insights on why backups should not rely solely on cloud storage.

He pointed out that cloud storage depends on internet connectivity. In contrast, external hard disk drives (HDDs) operate independently of networks. As a result, they offer reliable access and can be securely stored offline.

Moreover, HDDs provide strong data security. Companies are increasingly investing in their own data centres due to compliance and security concerns. In this context, Kaese highlighted that cloud data access and usage are not always fully transparent. However, external hard drives allow complete control over stored data.

In addition, speed remains a key advantage. While cloud services typically offer transfer speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s, HDDs can reach up to 1 Gbit/s via USB connections from devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Furthermore, convenience is not compromised. Many modern hard drives include built-in software. This allows users to back up not only files but also system settings efficiently.

Cost is another factor supporting HDD adoption. External hard drives involve a one-time investment and do not require ongoing subscription fees. This makes them a cost-effective option for long-term storage.

However, Toshiba also warned against relying on a single backup. Physical risks such as theft, fire, or flooding can still lead to data loss. Therefore, the company recommends a dual-layer backup strategy using both local HDD storage and cloud-based solutions.

Ultimately, combining multiple backup methods offers a more secure and future-ready approach. This reinforces the importance of safeguarding data, especially on World Backup Day.
