The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has revealed that more than 12,000 security breaches were recorded through open and untrusted public Wi-Fi networks in the country since the beginning of this year.

The Council reported that these incidents account for nearly 35% of all cyberattacks in the UAE. Hackers are increasingly targeting users through vulnerable Wi-Fi connections, turning them into traps for stealing passwords, banking details, and personal information.

Officials announced that many users remain unaware of the extent of risks from free Wi-Fi, especially in public places such as cafes, airports, and shopping centres. These networks may seem convenient, but they are often unsecured and leave users exposed to fraud and hacking activities.

The Council stressed the importance of vigilance and highlighted safe practices. It urged users to avoid sensitive transactions, enable multi-factor authentication, and rely on trusted security tools. The use of reliable VPN applications was emphasised as a major protection measure.

To reduce risks, the Cyber Security Council recommended three key steps for users:

  • Use a reliable VPN application to encrypt digital connections.
  • Activate the “Safe Browsing” feature in the browser.
  • Avoid logging into sensitive accounts when using public Wi-Fi.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, stated that under the directives of the wise leadership, the UAE continues its efforts to build a safe cyber environment. He revealed that these initiatives form part of a national vision to strengthen trust in the digital ecosystem and promote safe browsing.

The Council warned that unsafe Wi-Fi use can cause leakage of personal and financial data. Hackers can read transmitted data, redirect users to fake websites, record calls, and even install malicious software without the user’s knowledge.

Officials reported that the Cyber Pulse awareness campaign has returned for its second consecutive year on social media. The initiative reflects the UAE’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness, counter cyber threats, and enhance the culture of cybersecurity while keeping pace with technological advancements.
