Group-IB, a global cybersecurity provider, has published its research into a large-scale phishing scheme in which scammers impersonate one of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's leading manpower agencies (KSA).

Check Point Research (CPR), the Threat Intelligence division of Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a global provider of cybersecurity solutions, has released its Brand Phishing Report for the third quarter of 2022. 

Cybercriminals are very creative and always follow trends closely, even predicting change before the masses in order to maximize the outcome of their techniques. Not too many years ago, there were only a few platforms to use to target new victims while leaving little evidence and unlikely to face any repercussions. The dark web became a place to buy and sell contraband, but the numbers didn’t ever really hit the relative big time with the audiences such that those taking advantage of the technology could actually achieve their wildest dreams.

Kaspersky analysis has revealed that attacks related to data loss threats (phishing and scams/social engineering) increased significantly in Africa in Q2 2022 compared to the previous quarter. In the second quarter, the company's security solutions detected 10,722,886 phishing attacks in Africa.

Scammers select popular YouTube videos and leave comments promoting a fake "breach" in cryptocurrency market. To make their message more visible, they falsify statistics in comments and use bot replies to amplify the initial comment.

Loyalty accounts are big business, and hackers and fraudsters are increasingly zeroing in on a potential goldmine. According to one study, the global market for loyalty management is set to grow at an annual growth rate of 12.3% over the coming seven years to reach nearly US$18 billion by 2028. According to Group-Digital IB's Risk Protection team, a single scam network's potential victim pool is estimated to be around 10 million people, with potential harm totaling around $80 million every month.

CPR found 11 compromised wallet accounts, each of them containing between $1K to $10K. CPR went on to learn that the scammers had withdrawn some of the funds already before CPR’s discovery.

Indeed, older – and often lonely – people are at particular risk, the older generation is often trusting by nature and may not be attuned to the pitfalls that online dating platforms.
