The Terra Carta Seal has been given to Tech Mahindra, a provider of digital transformation, consultancy, and business re-engineering services and solutions. The Terra Carta Seal has been awarded to companies who hold a leadership position within their industry and who have credible transition roadmaps underpinned by globally recognized, scientific metrics for achieving net-zero by 2050 or earlier.

The Terra Carta Seal, which will be awarded for the first time in 2021, honors global enterprises that are leading innovation and proving their commitment to and momentum toward building truly sustainable markets. It will be given to businesses whose goals are in line with the Terra Carta, a recovery plan for Nature, People, and Planet that was launched in January 2021.

His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, said, “The Terra Carta Seal recognizes those organizations which have made a serious commitment to a future that is much more sustainable, and puts Nature, People, and the Planet at the heart of the economy. We all need to make changes if we are to preserve the Planet for our children and grandchildren, and these businesses have pledged to make it easier for us all to do so.”

Tech Mahindra has set ambitious emission objectives to reduce its absolute scopes 1 and 2 GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions, which have been accepted by the SBTI (Science-based Targets Initiative). Tech Mahindra is also collaborating with partners and clients to help them save energy, digitize and automate operations, and build collaborative work environments in order to meet the demand for sustainable practices. This includes integrating NextGen technologies such as IoT, AI, and Blockchain, as well as building solutions such as Micro Grid as a Service, Greenfield Smart City Solutions, Smart grid, Smart Data Hubs, Smart Street Light, Smart Bin, Smart Energy Management, and Smart Metering and Analytics.

The Terra Carta Seal recognises that each industry faces distinct obstacles as it transitions to a more sustainable future, and that each is at a different stage of the process. All industries and businesses must be aided in their efforts to go in a more constructive way. Simultaneously, if we are to meet the 1.5-degree objective, restore biodiversity, and improve the lives and livelihoods of current and future generations, we must move at a faster speed.

Sandeep Chandna, Chief Sustainability Officer, Tech Mahindra, said, “The pandemic allowed us to step back, introspect and reassess priorities to build a sustainable and futuristic world with equitable opportunities. Tech Mahindra has been a forerunner towards delivering innovative solutions to effectively respond to climate change and drive towards a greener digital economy.”

He added, “Our emphasis on clean energy and optimum use of resources helps us in accelerating our transition towards a low carbon economy while also creating sustainable value for our stakeholders. Receiving the Terra Carta Seal is yet another testament to our commitment towards sustainable practices and principles.”

Sir Jony Ive and his LoveFrom creative team collaborated closely with HRH The Prince of Wales to produce a real and animated seal made of simple and wonderfully designed paper. The design incorporates a variety of natural references such as oak leaves, fern, magnolia, honey bees, and intricate patterns seen in nature and the arts to create a visual celebration that represents the Terra Carta’s power and reverence for nature.

“With respect for both the historical resonance of the Terra Carta and for the environment, we have used modest, natural materials and celebrated craftsmanship with a delicate, illustrated design,” said Sir Jony Ive.

He added, “This feels a sensitive and sincere commemoration for those who have committed to the aims of the Terra Carta, and we are so very grateful to be able to contribute to such an important and impactful initiative.”

Tech Mahindra is one of the 28 Global 100 firms that have signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge to cut emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 to avoid negative climate change effects. Tech Mahindra, which was ranked #1 in India and #72 internationally in Corporate Knights’ list of the “World’s 100 Most Sustainable Corporations,” has adopted a climate action plan that lays out a roadmap for the company to become carbon neutral by 2030. To reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions, we want to increase renewable energy sources, improve resource efficiency, and reduce the usage of fossil fuels.
